Neutron sources
Neutrons are neutral sub-atomic particles with no electrical charge. Because of this, these unassuming particles are non-destructive and can penetrate into matter much deeper than charged particles such as electrons. In addition, because they have a property called spin, neutrons can be used to probe magnetism on an atomic scale.

2003 Career Path Survey
In 1995, a pioneering study was undertaken by DTZ Pieda Consulting to trace the career paths of PhD students within the remit of PPARC. The study focussed on students whose PhD awards had ended 6-8 years earlier as it was expected that they would be well established in a career.
This study was commissioned to update the information on career paths provided by the 1995 study. It focussed on a similar cohort of students whose PhD awards ended between 1995/96 and 1998/99. A similar methodology and questionnaire to the 1995 study were used to ensure that meaningful comparisons could be drawn between the two sets of data.

2003 follow-up of 1995 Career Path Survey
In 1995, a pioneering study was undertaken by DTZ Pieda Consulting to trace the career paths of PhD students within the remit of PPARC. The study focussed on students whose PhD awards had ended 6-8 years earlier as it was expected that they would be well established in a career.
This study was commissioned to follow up these students and to establish how their career had developed since 1995. The majority of these students came to the end of their PhD award about fifteen years ago.
The sample base for the study is not large (67 respondents) but it is considered to be representative of all those that participated in the 1995 study. The survey findings should be seen only as an indication of the long term career paths of former PPARC PhD students.
